Legendary Norwegian sports commentator Bjørge Lillelien after Norway knocked England out of the world cup, on Wembley in 1981: “Lord Nelson! Lord Beaverbrook! Sir Winston Churchill! Sir Anthony Eden! Clement Attlee! Henry Cooper! Lady Diana! Maggie Thatcher – can you hear me, Maggie Thatcher! Your boys took one hell of a beating! Your boys took one hell of a beating!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZTP8-8wIs
I am quite sure that neither of the ones mentioned above, some of them of obvious reasons, have heard of the miracle that took place on the Varsity in Guildford on the 11′th of April. However the game has probably sent shivers down the spine of all sports interested Norwegians who followed the game.
Both teams were very afraid of conceiving the first goal of the game and the managers Spjeldnæs and Wilson had obviously stressed the defensive organisation in the training sessions prior to the match. Even though the ball touched both crossbars, it was a quite boring first half with few goal attempts. However, in the last minute the away supporter exploded when Brandt ended a Fjellstrand attack with a clinical finish.
The half time break seemed to have been a bit to short for the home team, and they looked tired when the 2′nd half kicked off. This was probably due to the fact that they are in the last weeks of a long season. Fjellstrand and Brandt showed however no mercy and put another one behind the home teams excellent goalie, Richard Knell. From that point and up to the 70′th minute it was all Fjellstrand, and Svae and Iverslien put their names on the goal sheet. It seemed to be a comfortable and highly surprising away win, but when it was 20 minutes left to play Niel Wilson took responsibility, parked the defence and served the ball to Fjellstrands playing couch, who had few problems making it 1-4. This was a huge inspiration for the yellow, and Ryan Whitcombe made it 2-4 just minutes after, assisted by Matt Miller. Fjellstrand were stunned and the university lads had several opportunities to even the score. FSK however got a lucky breakaway and made it 2-5 minutes before the final whistle was blown.
The dream had come true for the Norwegian amateurs; they had beaten the ones that had invented the game…. No wonder that so many later showed up at Rygge airport to welcome the heroes and to ask them about their passport and boarding pass.
